Our closet floors seem to be filled with an inordinate number of old computer monitors that are just still working enough as to use as emergency backups; and quite a few unused rubber chickens. I think lots of other folks have the old monitors.

Swing Shift
Swing Shift
On Friday night, an organization with whom I work, Performing Arts Society of Acadiana (PASA), in Lafayette, LA, presented the world premiere of the new work "Swing Shift" by choreographer David Parsons set on music by Kenji Bunch, performed by the Parsons Dance Company and the Ahn Trio. We at PASA were lead commissioners for the new work, and had envisioned a collaboration between the Parsons Company and the Ahn Trio after presenting each group separately within the space of a couple of months a few seasons ago. We were delighed that Kenji Bunch, who came to Lafayette to attend the premiere, had his music chosen for the commission. With the premiere itself and a number of other activities while the artists have all been in town, this was a very satisfying week for us! For more photos, click here.

Art Shot
My friend Jeannine emailed me a batch of photos which we had taken during a walk around a park when we were in college. In those days, we went barefoot. One photo in particular revives the era: the "art shot" as I look over her shoulder at our reflections in a mirrored corner of a building near the park. Note the date.

I am using Apple's new Safari browswer on my iBook. Man, is it fast. And it does a few interesting things, such as show a little thumbnail of a large photo while the full photo loads. I'll try it on dial-up before long and see how much it helps there. I think the DOM is up to standard, too; it renders pages that work in Mozilla, etc. So far, so good...

01.5.2003/21:01
Having worked out the part about transportation some decades ago, vehicle manufacturers now battle for our custom in such arenas as cup holders, multiple DC power points, etc. The new car we bought the other day has keyless remote entry (a little remote control on your keychain that lets you unlock the doors, pop the trunk, etc. by pressing a button). The surprise to me is how much I like this, not just for unlocking my or a passenger's door, but for being able to walk up to the car and have the back door unlocked through the magic of radio waves, no trying business of unlocking the front first, then reaching around. How lazy such things make us, I am glad to report.

Meanwhile, the basic issues work the same as all my other previous cars: you sit down in it and move your feet and hands a bit, and before long you can be in another town!
