Not five years!
Much expected update: "Service on the A and C line subway will be fully restored within the next six to nine months - not the five years previously feared - with more trains expected to be back starting next week."

X1
I was already thoroughly enamored of X1 when I got a notice this week of a free upgrade for registered users. My, my, my what wonders! This already-useful file organizer has leapt into a new level of power with this latest upgrade. It is so easy to find files, including emails I wrote or received months or even years ago. And, in what might be construed as a tip of the hat to Mozilla, you can reply, forward, and compose Mozilla email now from the X1 interface.
This is a truly powerful and useful program.

No TV
My friend Steve sends this rant against television, which suggests going without for a week. There are already quite a few weeks a year when I go 168 hours without watching TV ... except for the local forecast on the Weather Channel. Once or twice we have been selected as diarists for TV ratings, and the only entries were for the Weather Channel. Now that we have DVR, we probably watch an hour or two a week of time-shifted programs. And of course, there's the odd evening such as last night, when we while away an hour or two with Law & Order.

Don't dismiss this as flip -- this collection of condensed philosophical works is truly useful and very, very well executed.

Trouble underground
"Subway service on the C train could be knocked out for up to five years and A train service could be severely hampered for that long after a fire Sunday at a Chambers Street electrical room."

Poor Me
I have a big-time cold. I'm taking doxycycline. So far, no terrible side effects. Just a terrible cold. You should hear me cough. No, never mind, you shouldn't.
I was in New York for ten days, sat next to snifflers on the subway, dined with hacking coughers, and washed my hands so much that they began to get chapped. I tried never to touch my nose. I still got a cold. I'm drinking lots of liquids. But I'm not really getting plenty of rest, because work duties call.
Did you really want to know any of this?

MLK
Today is the birthday of Martin Luther King, Jr., which will be obsreved as a holiday on Monday, Jan. 17 this year. Every year at this time, in keeping with the observation, I reflect back on having lived through the tumult of the 1960s Civil Rights Era, and each year the memories have a slightly different array of significance. I would not be surprised if, in the histories that are written about the U.S. three or four hundred years from now, that time will be remembered as a milestone period along with the founding of the nation and the Civil War. When you come to think about it, in the 1960s (and to a large extent, still today), we were (and are) still dealing with issues that were not resolved well enough when the country got started and still weren't resolved when we split apart and fought.

Endangered in Inwood
I suspended my hike through the wilds of Inwood Hill Park at this point to respect a project to save endangered hawks. Inwood Hill Park contains the last natural forest and salt marsh left in Manhattan. You can go truly into the woods just a few steps away from the northern terminus of the A train.
