Thankful, yes, but...
This is an odd Thanksgiving around our house, in that we had relative good fortune in regard to the immediate effects of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita (although we may yet suffer in significant ways from the more complex environmental and economic imppacts on Louisiana and the Gulf Coast), but to take too much comfort in having been spared the worst too ignores the fact that many very near to us were not, in fact, spared from terrible losses. Most of the folks I spend time with around these parts are still a bit glum, and I am inclined to attribute that to a kind of collective grieving. Material losses, though less important than they seem when you first confront them, nevertheless can force other disruptions of life, family and closeness to loved ones. Perhaps the challenge for us this week is to be thankful without being callous or gloating - or without wracking ourselves with survivor guilt.

Oh, well, too bad
"Taxpayers, who will pay three-fourths of the program's costs, will be fleeced. Drug prices in private plans are considerably higher than the prices negotiated by the VA. And seniors, who will pay the remaining costs through premiums, deductibles and co-payments, will also have huge - and growing - out-of-pocket expenses."
