Evil robot?
"No, Timmy, that robot wasn't 'evil.' It was sent to this planet to gather information, and just went haywire when it encountered our strange blend of logic and intuition."

"But jeepers, Dr. Christopher, what about what it did to Peter?"

"When the robot locked Peter in the basement of the old school, it made sure there was plenty of food and water so that Peter would be all right. In fact, the robot was fascinated by our need for food and water. You might say that the robot liked keeping Peter in one place so that he could be observed. Sort of like you do, Timmy, with your hamster, Lorraine."

"But I don't want Lorraine to get away."

"Exactly, Timmy. The robot didn't want Peter to get away. But he took care of him and made sure he had plenty to eat and drink."

"Yech, cans of asparagus and stuff. It could have at least brought some hamburgers."

"You might think about that kind of thing, Timmy, next time you get food for Lorraine!"

Don't be a litterbug
Today I realized that although anti-litter campaigns and general enviornmental awareness have no doubt contributed to the fact that roadsides don't seem to harbor as much litter as they did a few decades ago, there is another reason: So many more cars are air-conditioned these days, that the sort of folks that are lazy enough to litter are too lazy to roll down their windows, so they just trash their cars instead of the road.

Moving my web site to a server with CFMX 7 adds some new capabilities; the first change here is that now, when you use the search blank, you will get suggestions if you get no or few matches, and there might be another word or phrase that would lead to successful matches. Prime rate
Amazon.com has introduced a new service called Amazon Prime, the key feature of which is that if you pay the $79 a year membership fee, all your orders are sent by two-day shipping, with no other shipping charges (unless you opt on a given item to have it shipped overnight for $3.99). While this is not appealing to me -- I usually have things shipped for free by choosing the slowest method, being a patient (and miserly) type -- I am curious to see how well this does for Amazon.com.

Particularly, I wonder if an Amazon Prime customer will have his buying habits and expectations changed in the subtle way that, say, moving from dial-up to broadband changes the way you use the Internet.

Radio@AOL
In order to listen to WQXR on the Internet these days, one has to tune in through Radio@AOL. Lo and Behold, this turns out to be a rich treasure trove not only for classical music (there is, astoundingly, a channel for 20th Century classical music!), but just about every other significant genre as well. Just at the moment, I'm enjoying the Bossa Nova channel, one of about a dozen or so Latin offerings. Sometimes I slide over to the Classic Country of Bluegrass for a while, or maybe listen to Big Bands or Jazz Vocalists. If you want to hear announcers, and, yes, commercials (which I find good company, actually, now and then) there are several stations (of different formats) besides WQXR that have live streams. All is all, a nice service. I think you need to be an AOL subscriber to get the music, but I keep my AOL account for ease of dial-up connections when traveling, so I still have a username and password.
