Gimme that golf!
I slipped away from productive work until mid-afternoon today, to attend the first round play at the Louisiana Open. Since I was there in the heart of the workday -- that it, when honest, hardworking people were at their jobs and so the galleries weren't crowded -- I got to prowl around and see several of the groups of golfers. I was lucky enough to see more than one moment when a golfer birdied his way into the lead, and saw a half-dozen holes of solid play from Guy Boros, who as I write this is the leader at -7, although that could change as the afternoon play goes forward. You can check the progress at the truly impressive web-based leaderboard.

I also saw quite a bit of this moment's second-place -6 Rafael Gomez, who managed to help himself by consistently leaving himself with 6 to 15 foot putts for birdie; and watched several sweet birdie putts from Charley Hoffman.

I love this event, and try to get out to see some of it each year, especially those early rounds.

Bad stuff about...
What with all the news about Martha Stewart, greedy CEOs going down in flames, and occasional politician's-child drug troubles, I was thinking that it would be convenient to consolidate all the Bad Stuff About the Rich and Famous into one place. I checked, and the domain name schadenfreude.com is active. But there's not much there. Same for schadenfreude.net, at least where bad news about others is concerned. And schadenfreude.org is "under construction." Ah, we must wait. And hope.

Subway history
"When the subway opened on October 27, 1904, 150,000 people paid a nickel each to ride. New Yorkers embraced the IRTs clean (electric power produced no smoke and cinders), quick ride. It was the fastest city transportation system in the world; its four-track design enabled both express and local trains to run in each direction, and 'City Hall to Harlem in 15 minutes!' was the slogan."
