Something good from the garden
I realized today when I was out watering the yard that I not only like having fresh tomatoes during the summer, I also really like the smell of the tomato plants themselves.

Slug
Last night I dreamed that we were all of going to see a movie titled Bug! There actually have been a few movies which one way or another, were so named.

My movie was about one single huge bug. All we knew was that in the beginning of the movie, the bug eats up a gang of ne'er-do-well biker thugs (the typically expendable introductory victims) and the rest of the movie is about the bug threatening some pretty girl, who is of course saved by the hero.

Somewhere between the twilight of waking and pondering it once I was up and sipping tea, I started thinking a better movie might be Slug. The sequel would be called Slugs. Or even Slug Trail.

Unseasonable Affected Disorder
We have had a long series of gray or rainy days in south Louisiana. Sometimes we welcome a stretch of dark cloudy days in mid-summer to give a break to the unrelenting heat, but to go through this in May is depressing me a wee bit. I'd like to have a few days of strong sunshine, even if the sweat does stream down my neck.

Well, I got one
If you read the post I made when the new Nikon D70 was announced to the market, you are probably not surprised to learn that I tracked down a camera store that had one and ordered it.

The camera came Friday (I also ordered a telephoto zoom) and I was off to the best local birder's haunt, the Nature Conservancy's Lake Martin. I shot this barred owl with the long lens.

Blackberry Pickin'
When Susan and I dropped around the old Boldt paper mill this afternoon so that I could photogrpah the stack in afternoon light, she alertly noticed a few blackberry vines making a proud stand around the steps of one of the abandoned buildings. We picked a couple of cups of berries in quick order, and, inspired, dropped by the drug store to get a couple of plastic pails and then headed out to a berry patch we know in the country.

We were well rewarded for the trip. It's rained here the last few days, and the berries were plump and ripe. We had to force ourselves to quit picking, acknowledging that once your pail has reached a certain point, you're moving forward on pure obsession.

When I got home, I pulled out the largest Pyrex roaster I had and filled it with berries (and still have some left for tomorrow morning's cereal!). It took a triple recipe of the shortbread to fill out the cobbler. It's out of the oven and cooling now, for us to bring to a friend's house around the corner. Wish you could be there to have some with us!
