Arresting...
Today I went with my sister Elizabeth and my nephew Beau to the International Spy Museum; in addition to the rather richly stocked permanent exhibition, there was a special show called The Enemy Within: Terror in America -- 1776 to Today, whose most arresting (if not downright girsly) feature was a set of scraps from the jets that crashed into the World Trade Center Towers on 9.11.2001.

Lemon Tart
We went to our friends Patrick and Elizabeth's house last night, and without having particularly planned it that way, had a fresh pickings meal. I made tomato soup from fresh market tomatoes and thyme from our garden; Elizabeth made potato pancakes with spuds from the same market, as well as this lemon tart topped by blueberries from the bushes in her yard; and Patrick mixed watermelon martinis with juice I had squeezed. Yum!

I rounded out my camera upgrading last week at BH Photo Video, picking up the new Pentax Optio S4i. It's a tiny little package, and is part of the new generation of cameras that eliminate shutter lag once the focus is completed. But, as you can see from this cicada photo, it is inclined to redeye.

In any case, it's a great slip in the pocket and forget about until you see a photo to shoot camera.

Cool breezes, cool drinks
I am New York this week, and the weather has been mostly very nice; it may hit about 75 today, and the evenings have been mostly in the 50s. This is the last hoorah of bearable weather for me before the long hot Louisiana summer, to which I return on Saturday.

But I am hoping to ease the strain a little by instituting a home version of a new drink that I had this week at the Chow Bar around the corner from where I'm staying: the watermelon martini.
